Yot, Tell 'em!

Part 1 – Boogie

  Hello everyone! As you can see from the title, I’m gonna start a new drawing challenge! This time I’m gonna be drawing the bandmembers from the band, JILUKA! If you know me well, you’d know I’m a huuuuge fan of Visual Kei, a musical movement and fashion aesthetic originating from 1980’s Japan, meant to be visually dramatic in performance and looks. The subculture spans across many different music genres such as Rock, Glam, Punk, Goth, and other alternative music. In JILUKA’s case, they are considered to be in the ‘Loud Kei’ subgenre of Visual Kei, because they are a more modern Metalcore band, forming in 2015.

   By now you’re probably wondering, “Yot, why are you talking about JILUKA so much? I thought your favorite band was Malice Mizer.” Well yes, that is true,BUT, I do have a reason as to why I’m talking about this specific band today. Recently JILUKA announced their 2nd USA tour dates, and lucky me, I live in one of the cities they’re playing in!! I was able to snag VIP tickets for myself, and I’m so excited because this is going to be my first concert ever!!

   “Yot, you’re almost 20 and you haven’t been to a concert??” Okay you don’t have to rub it in, but hear me out: it’s kinda hard to find a nice concert to go to when all the bands you listen to are either disbanded (Malice Mizer), overseas, or never have concerts in the US. Unfortunately, VKei bands rarely have concerts in the US, and if they do,it’s most likely going to be in New York, which is why seeing that a Vkei band that I like announce they’re going to play in my city felt like finding a rare gem. Like, a Japanese band playing in Texas of all places?? It’s low-key unheard of.

   But anyways, yes, I did manage to get VIP tickets to go see them, and I’m so excited because this means I’ll be able to actually meet the bandmembers in person, take a photo with them, and get merch autographed by them!! I feel like I could explode from how anxious I am about meeting them soon, so I’m putting my emotions onto my art!!

   As you can see, today I drew Boogie, one of the most well-known bandmembers from JILUKA. He is the bassist of the band, and you can tell him apart from the rest with his cool piercings, and his iconic long black hair in a ponytail. Surprisingly he’s mot my most favorite bandmember (I do love all of them though). Zyean is actually my favorite, but Boogie is very fun to draw, so I decided to draw him first! I wanted to draw him playing on stage, which ended up being a challenge since I’m not good at backgrounds or lighting, but I think I actually improved on my lighting! You can see my progress on the slider below! Overall this was really fun , and I can’t wait to draw the rest of the bandmembers! Hopefully I can give my drawings to the bandmembers when I meet them in July! Hope you enjoy!
